Makeup for your Jamaican Wedding

There is no question as to why Jamaica is considered one of the top locations for destination weddings, from its pristine beaches, luxurious resorts, friendliest people and scenic views. Wrapped up in all that beauty is a warm and humid climate which can be just as hot as our famous scotch bonnet pepper causing a makeup meltdown if not applied bearing the climate in mind.

So let me share my thoughts on products to heat-proof your bridal makeup against the Caribbean heat.

Skincare

- Skin prep is everything - Not too many layers, use a moisturiser suited for your skin type. An emollient moisturiser that will hydrate the skin throughout the day is ideal for dry skin types. Persons with oily skin can opt to use a hydrating facial serum or a mattifying moisturiser. Normal skin types can opt for a lightweight moisturiser. Brands to consider are Dermalogica, La Roche-Posay and Cetaphil.

- If your Jamaican wedding is outdoors a formula with SPF is a must and there are many oil-absorbing lightweight formulas.

- There are different opinions regarding the need for primer for long-lasting makeup. I prefer to not use a primer.

Foundation

- My philosophy when it comes to foundation is that less is more. Please, Please, Please! Ensure that your makeup matches your complexion (always check in natural sunlight for a perfect match). Apply foundation in light layers where more coverage is needed and Blend, Blend, Blend… I love the kabuki brushes on the market for this.

- Foundation formulas ideal for the Jamaican heat are Revlon Colorstay (oil-free formula) for oily skin the controls excess oil and Makeup Forever Mat Velvet.

- Set your foundation with a light dusting of translucent powder applied using a powder puff, Laura Mercier and Black Opal provide good options.

Blusher

- I recommend a powder blusher for the heat. Apply after your ‘setting powder’ for a lasting, non-cakey finish

- Ensure that the edges are blended. I like brands such as Nars and Mac.

Eyes

- Reach for a waterproof mascara and pencil liner – a necessity for high temperatures and high emotions.

- Eye shadow primer will act as your insurance to prevent eyeshadow creasing and also provide a budge proof base. Brands to consider are Urban Decay and Smashbox or just use your foundation (light layer) and set with a light dusting of setting powder.

Lips

- To nourish lips apply your lip balm during skin prep so when you are ready to apply lip product the lips are super hydrated. Apply lip colour in a formula of your choice. I recommend carrying a touch up kit to include lipcolour and blot powder.

Finish

- Apply a fixing/setting spray – Blue Marble and Skindinavia are excellent options.
